Remember when Julia Roberts went to the Armani boutique on Rodeo Drive, bought a suit from the menswear section and wore it to the 1990 Golden Globes?
At the time, Julia was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Steel Magnolias. She had the suit tailored in store, did her own hair and asked a friend to do her make-up. Some 36 years later, this look is still remembered as one of the most iconic in Golden Globes fashion history.

Recreate Julia Roberts’ 1990 Golden Globes red carpet look
The formula is simple – a suit, a shirt, a tie and shoes.
Although Julia’s suit was from the menswear rack, I found these ladies wear alternatives. The closest I found was Sumissura’s dark grey wide leg trouser suit. I also love this much more affordable Gina Tricot suit. You can find the oversize blazer and boot cut trousers at ASOS.
Julia teamed her suit with a crisp white shirt, patterned tie, and a pair of brown leather brogues to finish the androgynous look. The tie is vintage Giorgio Armani – a close match to Julia’s.

Updating the look with Salon 1884 and playful brooches
Last year, after an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Julia stepped out in New York channeling her iconic Golden Globes look. This time wearing a blazer and lose fitting trousers by Salon 1884, Julia switched out the white shirt for grey, and the brogues for glossy black heels. Instead of a patterned tie, she adorned it with playful vintage brooches from the Jennie Walker Archive.

Julia decorated her tie with vintage and antique brooches, from quirky forks and spoons to frogs and stars. I found the decorative pin, beautiful diamond star brooch pin, vintage 80s gold sprawled frog, brass bee, and vintage gold fork brooch on Etsy.
